The Hierarchy of Water Needs

A very important point to understand about purifying water in an emergency is that you don’t have to purify all of your water to the same degree. I call this the “Hierarchy of Water Needs”. Think about the different uses for water… At the top of the list is drinking water for infants, newborns, young children, the elderly and immune compromised people. Do you remember the cryptosporidium outbreak in Milwaukee in 1993? Over 100 people died from that incident, and most of the deaths were the very young, the elderly or people with compromised immune systems. Use only the highest purity water with absolute certainty of biological protection, or in other words, use distilled water or a large name bottled water, such as SmartWater or AquaFina. Avoid other types of water if at all possible. Also at the top of the list is water for medical purposes. See the previous recommendations regarding water quality. Next, and still extremely important, is drinking water for adults. It’s very important that you protect yourself from the different types of contaminants that can be in your water. This is especially true in an emergency situation, because the infrastructure that keeps us safe can

A Clarification of My Position on Bottled Water

One of my core recommendations for being prepared for a water emergency is to have an adequate supply of bottled water on hand. Bottled water is very important, for reasons I will share. But every time I recommend bottled water I inevitably get some people who respond and proclaim that bottled water is the devil and I must be getting money from the bottled water industry for promoting them. I also hear from people who don’t like their water coming in contact with plastic, and there are other people who complain about the brands that I recommend. I want to set the record straight and cut through any issues you may have with bottled water. And also, before we go any further I want to say that no, I don’t receive any money from the bottled water industry. So with that out of the way, here’s what you need to know. WHAT DO I RECOMMEND? In brief, I recommend that you store one gallon per day per person for at least fifteen days. I recommend the small, half-liter plastic bottles and my preference is AquaFina brand. To see my specific recommendations, go here. WHY DO I RECOMMEND BOTTLED WATER? Bottled

How to React to An Emergency

Today I want to give you some guidelines for how to react after an emergency. It is a PDF that is formatted for easy printing, and I give you permission to give it away for free to people you know! Download it here. Every emergency situation is different and every location is different, so you will have to adapt to your situation and make the best decisions possible based on the information you have at the time. These guidelines may help you. BEFORE AN EMERGENCY, Be Prepared! Your options greatly increase if you are properly prepared. AVOID IF POSSIBLE. It’s ALWAYS better to avoid a situation in the first place, if possible. Some disasters, like hurricanes, can be seen before they strike, which gives you time to avoid the situation. Hurricane Katrina is a good example of an emergency that was avoidable for many people. Hundreds of thousands of people were able to evacuate New Orleans before it hit, which greatly improved their chances for survival. STEP ONE: GET SAFE. Obviously the most important thing to do is to get you and your family safe from immediate danger. If there is a tsunami headed your way, for example, get to

When Your Options Are Limited

My goal is to help you be prepared for an emergency situation, and the most important thing that you need is KNOWLEDGE. With this in mind, I want you to understand an important aspect of water in an emergency that most people don’t understand: the impact of having a lack of options. What do I mean by a “lack of options”? Today, right now, you can jump out of your seat and go to the kitchen and turn on the tap and (in most cases) drink safe drinking water. Or you could go to any number of stores in your town and buy bottled water. You can even, if need be, jump in your car and drive hundreds of miles to get water there. You have plenty of options. In addition to this, if you get sick you can go to the store to get medicine, you can go to the doctor, or you can even call an ambulance if need be. Again you have plenty of options. When you have plenty of options, it’s not very serious if one of those options goes bad. If the tap water coming to your house stops flowing because of a water main

Ask Glenn Meder: How to Assess an Emergency Situation

This is an article series in which we answer your questions about being prepared for an emergency. Got a question? Post a question in the comments of this article or email Glenn at glenn@survivalstill.com. To download a print-formatted PDF of this article, click here. Question: How do I know if I am in a water emergency situation and whether my water is safe to drink? What should my first steps be?  Answer. These are vital questions. Here are the steps that you need to take after an emergency situation… Your first step happens PRIOR TO an emergency situation. You should be as prepared as possible. Being prepared a) gives you options, b) allows you to stay calm, and c) puts you in a position to help others. The first step DURING an emergency situation is to make sure that you and your loved ones are out of immediate danger. The next step is to make a situational assessment, which requires you to be as aware as possible of what is going on, and you need to remain calm so you can think properly. These are some of the questions you should ask yourself… How serious is the situation? What do

What is an EMP and how dangerous would it be?

We at Survival Still want to keep you informed of why you should be prepared. Probably the scariest threat is an Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) weapon that could seriously damage or cripple our electrical infrastructure. Three quick facts: 1) The US is completely dependent upon our electrical infrastructure. We are more vulnerable than any other country. 2) We can’t deny that there are a number of countries that would like to cripple us if they had the opportunity. 3) The technology to produce massive EMP’s exists, and North Korea most likely already has this technology and Iran is working on it. Don’t be scared about it, but be aware and take precautions. Watch the video for more information.

Desalinate Seawater with the Survival Still

One of the unique benefits of the Survival Still is that it allows you to desalinate ocean water. What this means is that, with the Survival Still your family is able to convert ocean water into high-purity drinking water, forever! So yes, your family can live on ocean water for as long as is needed. Up until now, the largest source of water on our planet was untouchable! The surface of our planet is 70% ocean water. Over 40% of the population in the USA lives on the coast. The Survival Still is the only emergency water purification system that we know of that is a permanent desalination system. There is no filter on the market that can claim this. Even other water distillers can’t say this – you will void the warranty on all other distillers if you try to purify salt water. The Proof Early last year we did some test on ocean water. The water was highly contaminated, yet with one pass through the Survival Still, the water was better than 95% of all bottled waters on the market! If you want to get technical, the ocean water started out with over 30,000 parts per million (ppm)

Distillation is the Best Process During an Emergency (Part 7)

This is the seventh article in an important series that will provide you with essential  and practical information for surviving during an emergency. Please start with the first article in the series. Distillation is the most secure method of purifying water for consumable purposes during an emergency. Distillation provides the highest level of  protection against the full range of possible contaminants, ESPECIALLY BIOLOGICALS. It’s also the only process that can reliably purify ocean water. BUILD YOUR OWN WATER DISTILLER FEMA and the Red Cross have the following instructions for making your own basic water distiller: To distill, fill a pot halfway with water. Tie a cup to the handle on the pot’s lid so that the cup will hang right-side-up when the lid is upside-down (make sure the cup is not dangling into the water), and boil the water for 20 minutes. The water that drips from the lid into the cup is distilled. (See illustration.) BUT THERE IS A BETTER WAY TO DISTILL YOUR WATER… Yes, you can try building your own water distiller like this, but it is much better to be prepared with a professionally designed emergency water distiller. The best emergency water distiller on the market
